Description

The Paris Salons. The Dark Tower. The Well. The Harman Academy. From 18th century Paris to the Harlem Renaissance to 20th century internet platforms to our own 21st century Harman Academy at USC—these spaces have brought together diverse people to explore, debate, create, innovate, agitate for change, or simply feed one’s curiosities. One Harman Fellow expressed her experience in the Academy this way:

“I admittedly first stumbled on the Harman Academy as I was in search of free pizza but found the talks to feed a different type of hunger that kept me returning.”

For this year’s Polymathic Pizza Series, we will explore contemporary concerns by engaging the format and richness of the salon. Salons have a long history of being a space for writers, artists, philosophers, and activists to express their thinking and creative energies, to test run ideas with others with critical interrogation in a civil and open-minded environment. The salons in 18th century Paris and England, for instance, were gatherings driven by discussion around politics, philosophy, science, and literature. Regulars at these salons included Benjamin Franklin, Rousseau, Diderot, and the Thomases -- Jefferson and Paine. They were organized and run by prominent, educated women in their private homes, which allowed these salonnières a degree of power, agency, and freedom that was denied them beyond these spaces.

During the 1920s, salonnière A’Lelia Walker, heiress to her mother’s cosmetic empire, held weekly gatherings at her home in Harlem to bring together African American artists, writers, and political radicals. Writer Countee Cullen, one of the most representative voices of the Harlem Renaissance, dubbed Walker’s salon, The Dark Tower, and among those who regularly gathered there were Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Wallace Thurman, and W.E.B. DuBois. “A’Leila Walker,” wrote Hughes, “was “the joy goddess of Harlem” because her home was filled with the exchange of ideas, a “dynamic site for synergistic experimentation and politically radical creativity.” African American Literary scholar William J. Harris writes that these “salons played a critical role in the clustering of ideas, in linking people,” while also fostering a degree of empowerment, agency, and freedom that was otherwise denied African Americans beyond these demarcated spaces.

Salons then and now are social, technological, and intellectual laboratories. The Harman Academy, both in Doheny and Leavey Libraries, is in every sense a modern-day salon. For our 2024-2025 season, we issue a call to students and faculty to come together to carry on the salon tradition, where the exchange of ideas and the fostering of creativity remains alive and well.

Philosophy and Politics of Virtual Worlds

When: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Ahmanson Lab | Leavey Library, 3rd floor (LVL 301)
Event Type: Conversations
Our world is becoming more simulated: from the temporary virtual reality and gaming environments into which we voluntarily enter to the artificial, bot- and ai media-dominated online spaces into which we may soon find ourselves to the fully simulated world into which we may unknowingly live. This shift challenges us to navigate the ethical, social, and philosophical implications of living in a world where the line between reality and simulation is becoming ever more indistinct.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: How can we prepare ourselves to engage with our increasingly simulated digital spaces in critical and informed ways? What are the social and political implications of virtual worlds, including the capacity to counterfeit people and to simulate human behavior at scale? How does the prevalence of virtual and simulated environments affect mental health, and what strategies can be employed to promote psychological well-being in these digital spaces? How can individuals and societies develop strategies to navigate the complexities of a post-truth world where misinformation and simulated realities blur the line between fact and fiction?

Working Conditions in the Tech Industry

When: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Ahmanson Lab | Leavey Library, 3rd floor (LVL 301)
Event Type: Conversations
The tech industry is plagued by numerous examples of poor working conditions and lack of worker autonomy. ‘Ghost work,’ which involves data labeling for machine learning models, is often characterized by low pay ($3.31 an hour on average), lack of job security, and poor working conditions, as these tasks are outsourced to underpaid contractors around the world. At companies like Amazon, warehouse employees frequently endure grueling working conditions, including strict productivity quotas, limited breaks, and inadequate safety measures. Workers in the gig economy are frequently paid according to opaque algorithms that determine both their compensation and job availability, making it difficult for them to predict their income and leading to a lack of job security and financial stability. Even software developers are crunched under extreme performance metrics and increasingly systematized monitoring.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: In what ways does the current wave of automation and declining working conditions in the tech industry resemble past periods of rapid technological change, such as the Industrial Revolution, and what insights can we gain from history to address today's labor challenges? How does the lack of transparency in algorithmic pay structures impact workers' rights and job satisfaction? How does the reliance on ghost work contribute to the perception of advanced AI capabilities, and what are the ethical implications of obscuring the human labor that actually make these technologies possible?

The Cybertruck

When: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Ahmanson Lab | Leavey Library, 3rd floor (LVL 301)
Event Type: Conversations
The Cybertruck represents significant technological advances, featuring innovations like steer-by-wire technology, adaptive air suspension, and a powerful electric drivetrain that showcases the potential future of automotive engineering. But the truck has also sparked a wide range of social and cultural critiques. Some argue that, while an electric vehicle, the energy required for its production along with its size undermine its environmental benefits. Others have described it as an elitist military-style vehicle designed to protect the wealthy from inevitable urban warfare and societal collapse. Still others see the hostility and controversy surrounding the Cybertruck simply as an extension of the polarized feelings about Elon Musk himself.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: Does the Cybertruck represent a bold futuristic design that demonstrates Musk's unique ability to take a concept directly from cyberpunk video games and bring it to life? Or is it an impractical, excessively masculine design that overreaches and should embarrass its owners? Or is it just a truck? How do the public's polarized views of the Cybertruck reflect wider attitudes toward technological innovation and the influence of tech leaders like Elon Musk on popular culture?

AI Companionship

When: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Ahmanson Lab | Leavey Library, 3rd floor (LVL 301)
Event Type: Conversations
Sherry Turkle, an MIT sociologist of technology and psychologist, has called our increasing reliance on chatbots for companionship, “the greatest assault on empathy.” Dubbed ‘artificial intimacy,’ she and others have bemoaned the way these technologies create illusions of companionship without the challenges and rewards of real human interaction, potentially diminishing our ability to empathize with others and undermining the development of meaningful interpersonal relationships. Still, AI companionship offers direct benefits such as providing consistent and personalized emotional support and companionship to individuals who may feel isolated, offering a non-judgmental and accessible platform for interaction.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: What are the potential long-term psychological impacts of relying on AI companionship? How might it influence how we relate to other humans and alter what we expect of them? What is so appealing about AI companionship and the emotional support of chatbots and AI avatars? Is the swift current adoption of AI companionship by many the direct result of our growing dependency on technology for social interaction in the past few decades?

Sora

When: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Ahmanson Lab | Leavey Library, 3rd floor (LVL 301)
Event Type: Conversations
OpenAI's Sora is an advanced AI video generation platform that leverages cutting-edge machine learning techniques to create realistic and dynamic video content. AI video generation platforms like Sora will transform media production, clearly. But perhaps more importantly, they represent a new way for machines to ‘understand’ the world. While Large Language Models produce human-like language, AI video generation platforms, in order to create highly realistic videos, utilize advanced machine learning to build up a nuanced understanding of how objects and environments should naturally behave. This comprehensive General World Model enables them to accurately predict and simulate complex physical interactions within a scene, ensuring that the generated content is both convincing and true to real-world physics.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: What are the potential benefits and challenges of using AI-generated video content? To what extent can General World Models be said to "understand" the physical world, and how does this differ from human understanding? How might biases in the training data for General World Models (akin to that of Large Language Models) affect their ability to accurately and ethically simulate the world?
