Scalar Support For USC Courses

The Ahmanson Lab Provides Faculty Support for Digital Exhibits and Multimedia Research Projects in USC Courses


As many USC faculty prepare to teach remotely in fall 2020, and in particular, to envision new practices for online learning and engagement, the Ahmanson Lab, a part of the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study at USC Libraries, announces a new program to support faculty to utilize Scalar in their courses. Scalar is an open source authoring and publishing platform, supported by USC Libraries, Dornsife, and the School of Cinematic Arts, and used by faculty and students in college and university courses worldwide to create born-digital, media-rich research projects and exhibitions. 


Priority will be given to projects that make use of USC Libraries’ Digital Collections, offering students imaginative ways to engage, analyze or visualize those primary materials. Examples of such projects include Mirrors and Mass: Wayne Thom’s Southern California, developed in collaboration with faculty and students in ARCH 404, The History of Modern Architecture in Southern California, and Unpinning History: Japanese Posters in the Age of Commercialism, Imperialism, and Modernism, developed for AHIS 387, Later Japanese Art. Successful applicants will receive robust support from the Ahmanson Lab. Dedicated Lab personnel will be assigned to each course to train students and/or faculty in Scalar and to provide semester-long support with project design, development, and implementation. Faculty may also have access to other library resources, including subject area specialists. 


We invite all faculty to apply for support here. The deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 7th. Faculty will be notified as to whether they will receive support on Monday, Aug. 10th.
