Below is a sampling of Scalar projects on which the Ahmanson Lab has collaborated.
In each case, we have worked closely with colleagues in USC Libraries and/or USC faculty and students to provide robust design, development, and technical support. Such support often includes: information design meetings to assist authors in thinking through the content, structure and organization of their project; visual design consultation and production of mockups for the look and feel of a project, including animation and image manipulation for project landing pages; custom styling and/or functionality via CSS, jQuery, and JavaScript; bulk uploads of media + metadata from the USC Digital Library; and Scalar training.
Fall 2020
Alice Online: The Works and World of Lewis Carroll is an online exhibition devoted to the works of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson using images from USC’s Cassady Collection of Lewis Carroll materials. The exhibition was built in collaboration with Devin Griffiths, students his Fall 2020 senior English seminar, and Sophie Lesinska, Head, Doheny Memorial Library.
A History of Photography in USC Libraries Collections is an exhibition covering the history of photography using diverse holdings of the USC Digital Library and sources in the public domain. The exhibition was built in collaboration with Megan Luke and her students in History and Theory of Photography (AHIS 373g).
In a Bronze Mirror: Eileen Chang’s Life and Literature was organized by Jenny Lin (USC Roski School of Art and Design) and Tang Li (USC Libraries) and built by Ahmanson Lab staff and a cohort of students in association with the virtual conference titled "Love, Lust, Caution: A Centennial Celebration of the Cross-Cultural Legacies of Eileen Chang" hosted by USC on November 20, 2020.
Together Apart: Freshman Colloquium is a collection of over sixty essays and creative works composed by USC students in their first college semester (Fall 2020). The project was built in collaboration with Mary Traester, Assistant Professor of Writing, with contributions from the project’s faculty organizing committee and panel leaders.
The Los Angeles Riots: Independent and Webster Commissions Collections is a resource highlighting documents from The Los Angeles Riots: Independent and Webster Commissions Collections in the USC Digital Library. The project was built in collaboration with Anne-Marie Maxwell and Suzanne Noruschat, USC Libraries.
When I Think of Home: Images from L.A. Archives celebrates the 25th anniversary of L.A. as Subject, a research alliance dedicated to preserving and improving access to the archival material of Los Angeles history. A collaborative effort of the L.A. as Subject community, the exhibit gathers together archival materials from almost fifty L.A. as Subject members, all relating to ideas of “home”.
LA as Subject: 25 years of Highlighting Southern California Archives was developed through a collaboration between USC Libraries and L.A. as Subject with support from the Ahmanson Lab and authored primarily by Alexandra Hontalas-Adams. Through rare visual materials and interviews with key participants, a new digital exhibit honors LA as Subject's twenty-five-year history of preserving, archiving, and sharing the culture and history of the Los Angeles region.
Spring 2020
A Case of Hysteria was developed in collaboration with Anne-Marie Maxwell and Tyson Gaskill of USC Libraries and brings together cross-disciplinary collections from the California Social Welfare Archives, Lila Berman papers, the Norris Medical Library. The exhibit explores women’s mental healthcare in California and beyond.
Unpinning History: Japanese Posters in the Age of Commercialism, Imperialism, and Modernism was developed by Rebecca Corbett, Anne-Marie Maxwell, Tyson Gaskill, and Ahmanson Lab staff in collaboration with with USC Dornsife's Rika Hiro and her Art History students. Hiro and students in her Later Japanese Art course (Spring 2020) curated the materials from EAL collections, focusing on the Taishō (1912-1926) and Shōwa (1926-1989) periods.
Japanese Book History: A View from USC Libraries was designed and developed by Rebecca Corbett, the Japanese Studies Librarian at USC Libraries with support from Ahmanson Lab staff.
The Space Age Hits The Road: Visionary Car Designs in America originated as an exhibition of the same name, held in Doheny Memorial Library in spring 2010 and curated by Tyson Gaskill and Andrew Wulf. This digital edition of the exhibition was created by Anne-Marie Maxwell and Ahmanson Lab staff.
2018-2019
Mirrors and Mass: Wayne Thom’s Southern California is an online exhibition created by students in the USC School of Architecture’s course The History of Modern Architecture in Southern California taught by Emily Bills (spring 2018). The exhibition was designed and implemented with support from the Ahmanson Lab using materials from the USC Digital Library's Wayne Thom Photography Collection.
USC Digital Voltaire is a multimodal critical edition of Voltaire's select correspondence held at USC Special Collections and available in the USC Digital Library. The digital edition was designed and implemented by USC library faculty and staff at the Ahmanson Lab. Welcome to Venice West: Audio Recordings from the Lawrence Lipton Papers is a digital exhibit created in conjunction with USC Libraries’ Special Collections. This exhibit highlights portions of the 147 audio clips from the Lawrence Lipton Papers digitized under the Council on Library and Information Resources' (CLIR) Recordings at Risk grant program.
