Polymathic Pizza Part II: Polymathic Pairings: An Integrated/Interdisciplinary Approach to the Intractable Problems of our Time

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.

--Leonardo da Vinci

Peanut butter and chocolate.  Oil and vinegar. Lucy and Ricky.  We all know these pairings are greater than the sum of their parts--they are in effect, polymathic—together, they bring the best out from the other and create something new.  Polymathy is exactly this… the integrating of variegated interests, skills, and expertise to innovate and problem solve. The spring 2019 Polymathic Pizza series pairs two professors from different, even disparate fields to address the critical issues (local and global) of our time: homelessness, discrimination, poverty, climate change, education, etc.  How might different perspectives come together to illuminate, mitigate, and even provide workable solutions to the critical issues we face?  Polymathic students will also engage and contribute to the conversation in break out groups, after which all will come back together for open discussion.  Our best chance at solving these problems is bringing together our creative and various voices, ideas, and skill sets—let’s put polymathy to practice for this purpose.
