This quote, from the sixth-century BC Greek philosopher Heraclitus, highlights how change isone of the most stable features of the universe. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, teaches thatthe cosmos is the interaction between yin and yang, with the transformative power residing inthe liminal space between. Change can nonetheless be painful, destabilizing, and frightening. However, it can also be transformative and purposeful—a rebirth. For the fall 2019 Polymathic Pizza series, we will explore the multifaceted meanings and realities of change to find the truth in Confucius’s words: “They must often change who would remain constant in happiness and wisdom.”
