ZYGO 1: Minds Matter—USC Policy on Student Mental Health

Friday, September 25, 2015
When: 12:30pm - 2:00pm
Location:
Harman Academy, DML 241

Mental health is perhaps the single most important factor contributing to our overall health. Some students are concerned that USC’s counseling staff is not large enough for the university’s large population. At present, with fewer than 20 counselors for an undergraduate population of over 18,000, many students feel the counseling center needs additional staff. Panel participants will discuss current student mental policies and will explore possible next steps to improve mental health services on USC's campus.

Moderator: Varun Awasthi, ZYGO Student Director

Panelists:
James Jacobs, MD, Ph.D., Medical Director, Engemann Student Health Center; Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Keck School of Medicine of USC
Varun Soni, Dean, USC Office of Religious Life
Donald Hilty, MD, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry & the Behavioral Sciences; Vice Chair of Education; Director of Medical Student Education, Keck School of Medicine of USC
Rini Sampath, USC Student Body President and International Relations Global Business Major, USC Dornsife

ZYGO is a joint program of the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study and the Levan Institute for Humanities and Ethics.  The series is organized by USC students in health and medicine who seek dialogue with USC faculty across disciplines in order to increase the integration of ethical themes into their curriculum.
